Glenda Meakin About the painting Descent from the Cross was painted in 1521 by Florence artist Rosso Fiorentino (1494-1540). It is in Pinacoteca Comunale, Volterra, Italy. In this early painting Rosso departed from the milder conventions of traditional classicism and High Renaissance art creating a disturbing scenario by using contorted poses and violent colors. With this and other paintings Rosso helped launch the style known as Mannerism in 16th-century Italy, a style which soon spread to France, eastern Europe, Germany, and The Netherlands. |
